Troubleshooting common AC problems can help you save on repair bills or help the initial call to a service technician go smoother. Avoid expensive repairs with these common air conditioning troubleshooting tips.

5 Ways for Troubleshooting Common AC Problems

  1. AC Not Working at All
When the AC does not turn on at all, reset the breaker. The jump may be exactly what the central air system needs to restart.
  2. 2. AC Not Blowing Cold Air
First, check your thermostat. Sometimes, multiple people adjust the temperature so it may not be the number you remember last.If that does not prompt cool air, it may be a refrigerant shortage. Though refrigerant does not need to be refilled, as it is encased in a closed circuit, there may be a leak. Insufficient refrigerant results in air that is not quite as cool as you would like. If this is the case, you need the assistance of your HVAC contractor to fix the leak. Please do not attempt to handle refrigerant yourself.
Also, look at the condenser and make sure it is clean and not dirty or blocked. Tall weeds, grass and other airborne debris can block your unit making it not function properly.
  3. Air condenser isn’t runningIf your condenser is not running, first check the power. Check for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker. Another cause could be the thermostat isn’t set properly. Lower the thermostat by five degrees and see if it kicks on. If no of this works you may have a faulty compressor or motor and you will need to seek professional help.
  4. Air unit shuts on and offThis can happen when you have a dirty or blocked condenser units, as well as a dirty evaporator. Give the unit a good cleaning and remove any obstructions that are blocking or clogging the unit.
  5. You forgot an annual checkup

An annual checkup for your HVAC unit is extremely important. The technician will check all the parts as well as the refrigerant level and recharge the system if necessary. An inspection can help catch or prevent any serious problems before they get worse leaving you hot and uncomfortable during the heat of the summer.
